Why meditate? Why go on retreat?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I re Why meditate? Why go on retreat?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I recently had the honor to do a 5 day silent meditation retreat with the renowned Saki Santorelli. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
What. A. Treat.⁣ (No pun intended!)⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Without fail, every time I do a silent retreat I ask myself at some point, WHY ARE YOU PAYING FOR THIS?? ARE YOU MAD??⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
But also, without fail, these retreats end up being so meaningful, none like the other but all full of insight and wisdom. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
The juice is found in what happens when we slow down, without distraction and in silence, to meet ourselves and our experience as it is in each moment. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
What is it like to be me? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And can I cultivate attitudes to that experience that trickle down into how I interface with everyone and everything else in my life? It’s a journey of a life time that benefits both me and the people around me. ⁣
⁣⁣⁣
What comes up when we meditate and how we react or respond is a microcosm for how we handle our day-to-day life. The patterns, the push and the pull. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
A retreat is in a sense a (gentle) bootcamp or a laboratory where we get to examine this even closer, and cultivate a kinder and more skillful way of relating to all that it means to be human, all that goes on in our experience - our thoughts, emotions, and body sensations. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
So why do I pay to do these retreats? Because it’s a gift to myself, to cultivate a skillset that makes this life a little easier to navigate.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
“Mindfulness is a way of accessing your inner resources,” as Saki would say. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Stay tuned for upcoming classes where you can practice accessing those inner resources too, wherever you are in your mindfulness journey, - and without needing to be quiet for a week if that doesn't feel like something you're drawn to 😉.⁣
⁣

“The sweetness of doing nothing” 🍓 I’m t “The sweetness of doing nothing” 🍓

I’m taking this Italian saying with me as I switch off for vacation. Before starting my mindfulness practice, as an adult, I didn’t use to be someone who was great at doing nothing. As a culture, I think many of us struggle with doing nothing or doing very little nowadays. The constant input from our screens, as useful as they are, can make us feel that we have so much less time than we actually do.

With omnipresent tech and filled up schedules, no moment needs to be “boring”, we never need to have an idle moment again.

But in that, things get lost. Space in the mind and body to rest, to have greater access to creativity and processing, and just moments to really experience how juicy and pleasant the little things can be.🌻

I love technology and lots of fun plans. But I’m always astounded by how much I gain from having phases or moments where I cut down on all the noise, and mindfulness practice has helped this overactive brain over here find its way back to this way if being with more ease.

May you find the sweetness in doing nothing, too.☀️
